Botox® vs. Juvederm®: Filling in the Facts

Many people think that Botox® and Juvederm®  are basically the same thing and that one product is better than the other. The truth is, Botox® and Juvederm® work hand-in-hand to achieve optimal results. While Botox® is a relaxer and Juvederm® is a filler, the two wrinkle treatments complement one another by relaxing the lines formed by facial muscles and restoring fullness to the face.

Bone, muscle, and fat are the structures below the skin that give the face its shape and structure. As we age, there is fat loss in the face which causes the skin to sag and lose its smooth appearance. More and more people are turning to Botox® or Juvederm®—or both—for aging gracefully.

Relaxer vs. Filler

Botox® is a relaxer made up of refined proteins designed to freeze and relax the muscles that cause creases and wrinkles.

Botox® can be used to both prevent and reverse the signs of aging.

Juvederm® is a filler and is made up of hyaluronic acid which is naturally found in the skin. This gel-like substance is designed to restore volume loss to achieve a desired fullness and to smooth unwanted lines.

Gold standard in wrinkle treatment

Botox® and Juvederm® not only work differently, they target different types of wrinkles.

Botox® is great for facial wrinkles that are visible when the face is expressive or moving. The target areas are usually the forehead and the lines around and between the eyes

Juvederm® is ideal for wrinkles and creases that appear when the face is relaxed. Juvederm® is also used for increasing the volume of the lips and restoring volume to areas on the face that look hollow or depleted. Common areas targeted by Juvederm® are the folds between the nose, chin, and mouth.

Downtime and results

These minimally invasive treatments are performed with very small, expertly guided needles. Juvederm® contains an anesthetic to help minimize discomfort. Botox® and Juvederm® may be administered after a topical numbing agent is applied.

Within a couple of days, results will be visible and will last three months for Botox® and 6-18 months or more for Juvederm®, depending on the product used, location of placement, and individual’s metabolism.

Cost of Botox® vs. Juvederm®

Like the results, Botox® and Juvederm® costs may vary depending on the doctor and the concentration of the injectable. It’s common for treatment to be charged per area or per unit. Obtain pricing information on injectables.

Side effects and safety

Both Juvederm® and Botox® are FDA-approved and safe as long as they are administered by an expertly-trained medical professional. Risks and negative side effects are often attributed to improper application or an individual’s sensitivity to bruising. Getting a free consultation before scheduling your treatment will ensure that you have time to discuss your possible risk factors and customize your results.
