Most of us have unwanted hair. Although there are dozens of at-home hair removal options from shaving to waxing and creams, these temporary solutions are only going to cause the hair to grow back thicker and darker. These can be inconvenient, cause skin irritation, and be very expensive in the long run (not to mention that unwanted hair can show up in unwanted times and places!)
It’s no wonder that permanent removal is such a popular option. If you’re considering laser hair removal, you may come across some myths that could be far from the reality. Debunking these myths will help in determining if laser hair removal is the best option for you.

Laser hair removal myths vs. reality.
Myth #1: Laser hair removal is very painful and can damage your skin. With technological advancements in medical instruments and procedures, laser hair removal is no longer a painful process. Topical numbing agents and skin serums can actually make the procedure nearly pain free. Once treated with the laser, hair will shed naturally from the follicle. There is no downtime associated with the procedure. Treated area(s) may be red or have the appearance of goosebumps, but it typically disappears shortly after treatment.
Myth #2: All the hair will grow back. After laser hair removal, most people are able to put down the razors, toss out the toxic removal creams, and kiss ingrown hairs goodbye for several months, years, or indefinitely. Each patient differs in the number of hair follicles that are totally removed and how many hairs grow back. Hormones and medications can play a role in hair regrowth as well. Laser hair removal is usually referred to as “semi-permanent” and often if hair does grow back, it’s less dark and thick than it was before.
Myth #3: One or two treatments is all you need. Hair removal is done over a series of treatments for maximum results. Over the course of several laser treatments, hair follicles are gradually destroyed. Additional treatments may be required depending on your individual results. The legs, armpits, chin, upper lip line, and bikini line are the most common areas for laser hair removal. Removal packages are designed based on an individual patient’s treatment goals.
Myth #4: Many people aren’t candidates for laser hair removal. Most people of varying skin tones and hair colors are candidates for laser hair removal. “Laser hair removal works on all skin types but it does not treat white hair, blonde hair, and some shades of red,” says Dina Crowell, Medical Master Esthetician at Cosmetic Center by VIVA. “For patients who have very light hair, we recommend electrolysis as the ideal treatment plan.”
Myth #5: All laser technicians and their techniques are the same. Experienced and skilled laser technicians can make all the difference, especially if your skin tone or hair color is not ideal for laser hair removal. Length of treatment, discomfort during the procedure, and ideal results can be affected by the level of expertise and experience of your practitioner.
